What prompted you to be an advocate and champion of children's health?

We wanted to increase physical activity and provide better nutrition for children and families. We opted to use the CATCH program in our elementary schools to showcase what we are doing to focus on healthy life styles. We decided to have a Wellness Celebration showcasing CATCH. The event was held for all students of MISD. The event featured a keynote speaker who encouraged students to be committed to a healthy lifestyle.

When did you adopt the CATCH Program and what prompted you to do so?

We adopted the CATCH Program at all of our elementary campuses last school year (2006-2007) as a result from funding from the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living.

Describe notable changes since implementing CATCH and how you know CATCH is working.

At the elementary schools there are posters with CATCH characters reminding the students on a daily basis. The students are more conscious about healthy food choices and understand the importance

What was your most significant barrier and how did you overcome the challenge?

What advice can you offer for those just beginning and for those who have already implemented the CATCH Program.

You need to provide training to the individuals at each campus that will actually be implementing the program. Also keeping your Administration staff informed of what is going to take place at the campuses.

What has been the reaction from parents, administration, students and community?

The reaction has been great from the parents, students and community. At the Wellness Celebration the students that attended had a lot of fun. We had parents asking if we could have this event on a yearly basis. At this time we are planning on having some type of wellness celebration on a yearly basis.

How do you sustain the program from year to year?

The program will be continued through the work of the CATCH teams on each campus. We will continue to inform and include and encourage students and their families to live healthy lives. We would like to see an overall community change, and see children making healthier choices toward a healthy lifestyle.
