CATCH Champion for June 2007

An Interview with Jeannie Dixon
Food Service Manager
Tri-C Elementary, Carterville, Illinois
What prompted you to be an advocate and champion of children's health?
In 2003, at age 43, I was diagnosed with borderline diabetes. I struggled to lose weight to maintain my sugar levels. I realized that if I had taken better care of myself when I was younger, I might not have had to struggle with getting my health back. If we can reach the children when they are young, we may help them prevent health issues in their adult years .
When did you and your district adopt the CATCH Program and what prompted you to do so?
We were chosen as one of six pilot schools in the state of Illinois in 2003. After we got on board with the program, I couldn't believe how easy it was to follow the guidelines.
Describe notable changes since implementing CATCH and how you know CATCH is working.
Our Physical Education classes have changed noticeably. Our students are moving consistently at a faster pace. No more standing in line or sitting on the sidelines. Our lunch program has changed by lowering the fat content in a lot of our food items. But, we have maintained our reputation as having good food to eat.
What are the keys to your success?
A PE teacher who is willing to change her PE philosophy.
Food service personnel who understand the importance of preparing healthy food
Administration who believes we can help develop our students' attitudes toward physical activities and good nutrition
What advice can you offer for those just beginning and for those who have already implemented the CATCH Program?
Stick with your program. It took a long time to allow our children to get into the unhealthy shape they are in now. It will not change overnight.
What was your most significant barrier and how did you overcome the challenge?
I didn't really come up against any significant barriers. The most work I had to do was re-vamping the menus to lower the fat content in many items. I also had to remind the ladies in the lunchroom to cut back on the amount of salt that was added to food. We don't add any salt to foods now.
What has been the reaction from parents, administration, students and community?
I haven't had any negative feedback from anyone regarding the CATCH Program. I think because I embraced it so whole-heartily, those around me embraced it also. I think the CATCH Program is the easiest all-around student health program there is.
What are your plans for the future? What is your CATCH vision?
We will continue to be a CATCH school. I would like to see every school in the state become a CATCH school.
Anything else you would like to add?
I now have my health back. I just wish, in my younger days, that I would have known what I know now. Perhaps we can help our children in their younger days to help maintain their health in their later days.
Good health must start early!
