The CATCH Program in Missoula started in 1995, and is a collaborative effort between St. Patrick Hospital , the Missoula City-County Health Department and other area agencies, to address and reduce the growing number of overweight school-age children in Missoula County and surrounding areas. Through this program, St. Patrick dietitians and clinicians work with schools and other partners to improve nutrition and physical activity level of kindergarten through fifth grade students. Since the program's inception, 2,130 children, or 68% of the student population, have been through the CATCH curriculum, and third grade students are showing a 31% increase in knowledge of how to achieve a healthy diet and a 25% increase in knowledge of the activities most beneficial to the heart and lungs. In addition, the number of children reporting that they eat fruit daily has increased by 38%, nutritional content of school lunches has improved , and activity in PE classes has increased. Congratulations to the team at St. Patrick for this achievement !
