What is CATCH?
The CATCH Program is a research based approach to child health that extends from the classroom, to the school cafeteria, into physical education classes, and then outward to the home and community. The CATCH Program focuses on coordinating four components: the Eat Smart school nutrition program, K-5 Classroom curriculum, a Physical Education program, and a Family program. The Coordination of health messages between these four component areas is critical to positively impact children's knowledge and behavior.
Eat Smart
The CATCH Program considers school cafeterias an extension of the classroom. Breakfast and lunch become opportunities for children to learn, practice and adopt healthy eating habits. CATCH classroom and physical education lessons come to life as children experience first hand the concepts of GO, SLOW, and WHOA Foods.
Classroom Curriculum
Educators are on the frontlines of learning, and teaching children about healthy living is no exception. Across the nation, administrators, teachers, PE specialists, nurses, counselors, and school staff have successfully created a healthy school environment by implementing the CATCH Program.
Physical Education
CATCH PE instruction provides a variety of learning experiences which address the wide-range of student ability in physical education class. CATCH PE content enhances movement skills, sports skills, physical fitness, social development, and subsequently promotes lifelong physical activity.
Family and Community
Perhaps you are already teaching your family that proper nutrition and regular physical activity are a lifetime priority. Or maybe, you realize your family needs to make some changes toward adopting a healthier lifestyle. Either way - the CATCH Program is a great place to start or further expand your efforts at home.
